Depending on the voltage necessary for the motor’s operation, you can choose a low or high voltage controller. A switching regulator works well for controllers with a wide operating voltage range.

In this article, you will learn about the working principles and applications of this electronic device. We’ll tell you about the design nuances of a control unit used in one of the most popular electrical motor types – a brushed DC motor.

We all know that for a DC motor, to change the direction of rotation, we need to change the polarities of supply voltage of motor. So to change the polarities we use H-bridge.  Now in above figure1 we have fours switches. As shown in figure2, for the motor to rotate A1 and A2 are closed. Because of this, current flows through the motor from right to left, as shown in 2nd part of figure3.

I believe that the combination of brilliant minds, bold ideas, and a complete disregard for what is possible, can and will change the world! I will be there when it happens, will you?

This is quite different from a typical brushed DC motor, where the coils are on the rotor and the permanent magnet is outside. Since the BLDC motor’s rotor does not use coils, there is no need to supply it with current. That’s why there are no brushes.

As the name suggests, the purpose of the L293D motor driver is to drive DC motors. The L293D is a popular motor driver IC that has a built-in H-bridge circuit that can drive two DC motors simultaneously.

The library has hundreds of thousands of components so I didn’t have any problem finding all of the required components for this PWM DC Motor Speed Controller circuit.

While sensors offer obvious advantages, they come with disadvantages as well. Some sensors have low tolerance to dust, and require regular maintenance. Others operate properly over only a limited range of temperatures. The use of sensors, and the implementation of all the attendant circuitry, increases manufacturing costs; and highly precise sensors are of course the most expensive.

The BLDC motor has a different from brushed dc motor to number of leads, and the connection is more complicated.

Once we are done with the design we just need to click the “Gerber output” button, save the project and we will be able to download the Gerber files which are used to manufacturing the PCB.

By using this method, the speed over a wide range can be obtained but below the normal speed. It is not economical due to considerable power losses in the diverter resistance. It is used in applications where slow speeds are essential at light loads.

Before going further we need to discuss the H-BRIDGE. Now this circuit has mainly two functions, first is to drive a DC motor from low power control signals and the other is to change the direction of rotation of DC motor.

The output of the 555 timer can sink or source a current of 200mA to the load. So if the motor that we want to control exceeds this rating we need to use a transistor or a MOSFET for driving the motor. In this example, I used a (TIP122) Darlington transistor which can handle a current up to 5A.
